1 Data Tools for the Pre-Service Teacher
Mitch Fowler School Data Consultant – Calhoun ISD Web Resource:

2 Today’s Outcomes Identify how MI School Data can be used to obtain state-level student assessment data for any MI district. Identify how to quickly analyze classroom-level data to inform instruction. Identify how Data4SS can be used as a resource for data inquiry and analysis. Develop an actionable response to the interview question “Describe one way you use data to inform instruction.”

3 “Describe one way you use data to inform instruction…”
Please respond to the question in bold.

4 Why? Several tools are available to answer this question, however you need to understand WHY it’s important to use data to drive instruction BEFORE you can answer this question. Flying the Plane as We Build It Video Simon Sinek Clip For most educators, the WHY focuses around a few simple questions: What was taught? What went well? What didn’t go well? What do I go next? If you are teaching and assessing without acting on the data, it’s like owning a scale and using it everyday, but not changing your eating habits after you see the number… It’s like going to get a check up at the doctor’s office, having them take your vitals and then prescribe you a battery of tests and treatments without even looking at the number on the thermometer, blood pressure machine, or scale.

6 Today’s tools: MI School Data (State Level Data only) Classroom Data Analysis (Classroom Level Data only) Data4SS (Resources for professional development)

7 MI School Data: Student Testing Information Financial Information Student Count Data

8 What are you going to do next?
What was taught? What went well? What didn’t go well? What are you going to do next? The classroom data analysis we will go through today will help to answer these four questions. I will provide you with templates to help answer these questions.

9 Data4SS contains guides to analyzing data with groups as well as videos on how to lead conversations around data.

10 Within MI School Data: Access Student Test Scores Select desired assessment (MEAP, MI Access, MME) Enter report criteria View Entity Breakdown to compare school to district to ISD to state

11 What are you going to do next?
What was taught? What went well? What didn’t go well? What are you going to do next? Understanding that you’d like to answer these questions going into a lesson or unit is essential. Based on these questions there are several ways to answer. I’ll show you one very simple way to collect and analyze classroom assessment data.

12 5th Grade SS Assessment 5 Sample Assessments 11 Questions Standards Assessed are in Parenthesis Take two minutes and answer the questions: What was taught? What went well? What didn’t go well? What are you going to do next?

13 Item Analysis: Kids’ names along the left Kids’ answers to each question

14 Item Analysis Summary:
Each question’s point value Each question’s standard (need to have the standard) # of students answered correctly Total Points = # of kids tested x’s Points column % Correct = # Answered Correctly/Total Points

15 Standards Analysis: Write the Standards Assessed on the left Write the # of items that are assessing the standard Points = # of points earned by ALL students on the items assessed within the standard Possible Total = # of points possible on ALL items assessed within the standard % Possible = Points / Possible Total

16 What are you going to do next?
What was taught? What went well? What didn’t go well? What are you going to do next? With a tool (albeit archaic), these questions are much easier to answer. Try this with a unit or series of lessons you teach during lead teaching!

17 The Data4SS website has tons of resources to enhance your understanding of data. Resources are found within the Professional Development section of the site.

18 Examining Student Work to Inform Instruction:
Take a look at the PPT as well as the embedded videos.

19 “Describe one way you use data to inform instruction…”
Please respond to the question in bold.

21 What are you going to do next?
What was taught? What went well? What didn’t go well? What are you going to do next? Understanding that you’d like to answer these questions going into a lesson or unit is essential. Based on these questions there are several ways to answer. I’ll show you one very simple way to collect and analyze classroom assessment data.

22 Based on my analysis of my classroom assessment data, I’m able to see that students had a difficult time with standard U This standard was completed at 80% proficient.

23 Examples of Adjusted Instruction
Proficient Non Proficient Activity A Activity B Extension activity that gets at higher level thinking for standard U3.1.1 Foundational activity that helps students understand that basics of standard U3.1.1 Web-based activity that is student driven. Small group work that is facilitated by the teacher. Based on my data, I’ve designed an extension activity as well as a remedial activity for students.

24 I’ve tapped into the Data 4SS website for resources on data conferencing so that my colleagues and I can begin to develop and discuss common assessment data.
