1 Lathe The size of the lathe is determined by the distance from the live center to dead center. We have a 24” lathe. Dead Center Live Center

2 Make sure the tool rest is in place before using the lathe.

3 Things to avoid Do not stop wood in lathe with your hands

4 Position the tool rest as close as
possible to the wood.

5 Always have the instructor check the set up before starting.

6 3. Always turn the material with your hand before starting to make sure the material does not hit the tool rest.

7 Never move the tool rest with the lathe running.

8 Do not leave the lathe until the wood has come to a complete stop.

9 . Always wear a face shield.

10 1. Check to see that stock is free of cracks, knots, or poor glue joints. Always have instructor check the set up before starting.

11 2. Lock the tailstock, tool rest & tool post securely before turning on the power. Never move tool rest while lathe is turning

12 Position the tool rest 1/8”
above the lathe center.

13 6. Stand to the side of the lathe when turning on the power.

14 Rotate rough stock at the slowest
possible speed.340 is the slowest speed.

15 8. Turn stock down to a cylinder before using higher speed.

16 Hold all lathe chisels firmly
with both hands.

17 10. Rotate large-diameter turnings only at slow speeds
