COMPARATIVE VERTEBRATE ANATOMY OF SKELETAL SYSTEM
2
BONE Inorganic components -60% of the dry weight Organic component -Primarily collagen
3
FUNCTIONS: Support Movement Protection Storage Blood-cell Production
4
2 basic structural types of bone:
Compact Bone - forms the outer shell of all bones and also the shafts in long bones Spongy Bone - found at the expanded heads of long bones and fills most irregular bones
6
Bone Formation -Begins with a blastema -These cells develop FIBROBLASTS or OSTEOBLASTS Fibroblasts -form collagen Osteoblasts -form bone cells.
8
Ossification Intramembranous Ossification -Membrane bone formation
Ex. Lower Jaw, Skull, etc. Endochondral Ossification -Replacement of Bone
9
Skeletal elements: Dermal skeleton Endoskeleton
-skin of most living vertebrates Endoskeleton Somatic - Axial and Appendicular Skeleton Visceral - cartilage or bone associated with gills & skeletal elements (such as jaw cartilages) derived from them.
