4 GWINNETT COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS In order to earn a regular Gwinnett County high school diploma, students starting in High school in the school year must: Learn the AKS in order to pass classes and earn the required course credit/units. Pass Gwinnett County ‘s High School Gateway Writing Assessment in the areas of Science and Social Studies, which is administered in 10th grade. To graduate, Georgia students starting high school in July 2008 and after must earn a minimum of 23 credits (also called units) in the following areas of study:

5 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Required Areas of Study Credit/Unit Language Arts Mathematics Science Social Studies Modern/Classical Language/or Technical Education/Fine Arts Health and Lifetime Fitness Electives Student can earn .5 units per class each semester. For admission to a University System of Georgia college or university, students must pass specific courses in the core academic areas – Language arts, math, science, and social studies – as well as two units of the same modern or Classical language. Any questions make an appointment to see your counselor

6 ATTENDANCE Good Attendance contributes to school success
Missed instruction from teacher difficult to replace Good Attendance conveys responsibility and take work seriously Be present at school as often as possible If absent, your responsibility to ask for missed assignments

(PRELIMINARY SAT/NATIONAL MERIT QUALIFYING TEST By taking the PSAT/NMSQT students practice for the SAT students compete for national scholarship students get mail from colleges, and students get feedback about important academic skills

21 WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT ? (MOWR)

22 MOWR Defined A process through which high school
students take courses at a state public or private postsecondary institution while still enrolled as a high school student and receive college credit at the postsecondary institution and high school credit.

23 Who is eligible to participate in the MOWR PROGRAM?
Students must be classified as a legal resident of Georgia. Students must meet citizenship requirements. Students must meet Selective Service Registration requirements. Students must be in compliance with Georgia’s Drug- Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990. Students must meet the postsecondary school’s admissions requirements. Ga resident, meet citizenship requirements, meet selective service requirements (if needed), no drug problems, meet the college requirements for DE admissions.

24 Where Can Students Take These Classes ?
Any unit of the University System of Georgia A branch of the Technical College System of Georgia A private independent nonprofit postsecondary institution eligible for tuition equalization grants A private proprietary postsecondary institution eligible for tuition equalization grants

25 MOWR vs. AP Courses Taught at the high school Enrolled in college
Credit earned through exam Successful completion of AP college-level courses and high scores on AP exams will earn college credit at all USG institutions and many private colleges. AP courses are available at high schools around the state as well as through the Georgia Virtual High School. Enrolled in college Taught by college instructors Core Areas: Math, Science, Language Arts, Foreign Language and Social Studies taken at a local college can allow a student to earn both college academic credit and high school credit.

Grade of “C” or better Public college & universities in Georgia Student’s responsibility to investigate, especially for private and out of state schools

30 STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY
Student initiated and student managed… Student/parent meeting or prior contact with Ms. Wilkinson, PHS MOWR Coordinator Register for a regular PHS schedule. Once accepted, contact Ms. Wilkinson and follow directions given. Schedule changes will be completed for PHS. Maintain contact w/ PHS for graduation and extra- curricular activities. Request college transcripts be sent to the high school each semester.
