1 Chapter 5: Describing Distributions Numerically
When describing distributions, we need to discuss shape, center, and spread. How we measure the center and spread of a distribution depends on its shape.

2 The center of a distribution is a “typical” value.
If the shape is unimodal and symmetric, a “typical” value is in the middle. If the shape is skewed, however, a “typical” value is not necessarily in the middle.

3 First, let’s look at Skewed Distributions:
For skewed distributions, use the median to determine the center of the distribution and the interquartile range to describe the spread of the distribution

4 The Median: is the middle data value (when the data have been ordered) that divides the histogram into two equal areas has the same units as the data is resistant to outliers (extreme data values)

The Range: is the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value is a number, NOT an interval is sensitive to outliers

6 The Interquartile Range (IQR):

7 The Five-Number Summary gives:

8 Let’s Practice: How many hours, on average, do you spend watching TV per week? Collect data from the entire class and record the values in order from smallest to largest. Calculate the five-number summary.

10 Summary Statistics: While you can count your way to a 5-number summary by hand for small data sets, we usually use technology to provide us with the summary. Many AP problems provide you ONLY with summary statistics. It is important to recognize at the outset of a problem if you are being given the full data set or simply the summary statistics.

11 Now, onto symmetric distributions!
For symmetric distributions, use: the mean to determine the center of the distribution and the standard deviation to describe the spread of the distribution.

13 The Standard Deviation:
measures the “typical” distance each data value is from the mean Because some values are above the mean and some are below the mean, finding the sum is not useful (positives cancel out negatives); therefore we first square the deviations, then calculate an adjusted average. This is called the variance. This statistics does not have the same units as the data, since we squared the deviations. Therefore, the final step is to take the square root of the variance, which gives us the standard deviation.

15 Now, back to the data! Find the mean and standard deviation of the average number of hours spent watching TV per week for this class.

16 Thinking about Variation:
Since Statistics is about variation, spread is an important fundamental concept of Statistics. Measures of spread help us talk about what we don’t know. When the data values are tightly clustered around the center of the distribution, the IQR and standard deviation will be small. When the data values are scattered far from the center, the IQR and standard deviation will be large.

17 AP Tips: Scales and labels on all graphs are required for full credit. Don’t lose easy points! Describe center, shape and spread. All three! And be specific. Is there a gap? Where? Is there an outlier? What is it? Read carefully. Have you been given the data set or just the summary statistics?

18 AP Tips (Cont’d): Your calculator can find all the summary statistics and make great graphs. Make sure you can do this quickly and efficiently. But also be on the lookout for problems where the summary statistics and/or graphs have already been given to you! Sometimes you won’t use your calculator, but you will need to use your analyzing and describing skills.
