Just Passing Through Opaque materials do not let light pass through them. Instead, an opaque material absorbs light, which enters the material but doesn’t leave it. When a material absorbs light, the energy from the light is transferred to the material. Many solid objects, such as metal, wood, and stone, are opaque because they do not allow light to pass through. Just Passing Through Materials that let light pass through them are transparent. Transparent materials absorb very little of the light that hits them. Mirror, Mirror The bouncing of light off an object is known as reflection. Light from an object that strikes a smooth, shiny surface, like a mirror, hits the surface from one direction and reflects in a single new direction. Mirror, Mirror As light strikes the surface of an object, the object absorbs certain colors of light and reflects others. For example, grass reflects green light while absorbing all other colors. Black objects absorb all colors of light. They also absorb more of the energy in light. White objects reflect all colors of light and absorb less energy. Light Bends The bending of light as it passes at an angle from one type of matter into another is called refraction. Refraction occurs because the speed of light varies depending on the material through which the light travels. As light changes speed and enters a new material, the light bends.
