Topographic Maps Topography is the shape of the physical features of the land surface. The best way of showing the shape of the land in an area is by using a topographic map
4
Topographic maps show you the elevations and features of hills and valleys.
Hills and valleys are marked with a series of curves called contour lines. A contour line connects all the points on the land surface that are at the same elevation.
5
The difference between each contour line is called the contour interval
The contour interval used on a topographic map depends upon the region’s relief. A region’s relief is the difference between the lowest and highest points.
6
Color and symbols on topographic maps are used to show natural and human-made features such as rivers, mountains, orchards, forests, roads, schools, and industries.
