5 What We Know Predictable barriers Differences in student learning
All students, regardless of age or grade level, learn in different ways. Teachers can design instruction that accounts for learner differences by incorporating the use of Web 2.0 tools and applying a UDL approach to instruction. In general, Web 2.0 tools can provide more options and flexibility for teachers to incorporate throughout their lessons to address what CAST refers to as “predictable barriers.” In other words, there will always be differences in the way that students learn, and if we can anticipate these predictable barriers and plan for them in advance, students will have more equal opportunities to learn. Teachers can begin to incorporate Web 2.0 tools gradually in their daily instruction to increase access to learning for all students.

6 Web 2.0 Tools What We Can Do Anticipate barriers Plan in advance
Common roadblocks to learning Plan in advance Incorporate ways to promote access Web 2.0 Tools

7 Why Web 2.0 Tools? Web 2.0 tools are easy to access, typically free, and can be fun and engaging for students. When used purposefully, Web 2.0 tools can be valuable assets in the classroom. A variety of Web 2.0 tools can be particularly helpful for students with specific needs and can be used to tailor instruction. Applying the principles of UDL provides teachers a context for incorporating Web 2.0 tools in a meaningful way.

8 Provide Multiple Means of Representation
Flexible digital materials Adjust font, incorporate multimedia (audio, videos, images, etc.), manipulate contrast Provide graphic organizers Highlight relationships of information Provide descriptions to accompany images & video text or spoken Principle I. Provide Multiple Means of Representation. In learning environments that provide options for representation, information and content are presented in different ways. Using flexible digital materials (e.g., ability to adjust font, sound, contrast), providing graphic organizers to highlight relationships of information, and providing descriptions (text or spoken) to accompany images and videos are all examples of different ways to present content.
