3 What is English 10?  The Grade 10 Thematic Units take students through literature and informational texts about how much control we, as well as technology, exert over our lives, and what we share and gain when we interact with others.

4 4 Units of Study Unit 1: Destiny: Macbeth: Argument essay
How much of what happens in our lives do we actually control? It’s a question that has troubled theologians, philosophers, writers, and so many others through the ages, and in this Grade 10 unit students will explore that question for themselves. In all, this unit offers students an exhilarating ride across the globe and across history to explore a question that is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago: how much of what happens in our lives do we actually control?

5 4 Units of Study Unit 2: Taking a Stand: Animal Farm: Literary analysis If rules are put in place to keep us safe, is there ever a time when we should be fighting against them? This StudySync unit explores the tension between the expectation that people should follow rules for the sake of order, and instances in which the “right” decision might be to challenge established rules. Students will explore the relationship between authority and citizens from several perspectives and will hone their own skills for identifying and supporting an argument.

6 4 Units of Study Unit 3: Technical Difficulties: Frankenstein: Informative Essay What kind of responsibilities do we have to our society and our environment? This is a relevant question that we all must ask ourselves as technology becomes more and more a part of our world. Technology has many benefits but also some undesirable consequences. While it can help people and the world around us, it can also have detrimental effects on communities and their natural surroundings. Students will explore the debates and dilemmas that arise and the responsibility that must be assumed when new technology is implemented in our world.

7 4 Units of Study Unit 4: The Human Connection: Night: Narrative
How do our interactions with those around us and with the larger world make us who we are? While studying different human interactions—between a son and his father or between a humanitarian and the refugees she saved —students learn about how our interactions with others shape our characters.
