2 Planner SOAR means… For 6th Grade Teachers ONLY:
Since writing in the planner is a new routine, please walk around and make sure they wrote this down.

3 Upper right hand corner:
Homeroom Journal Upper right hand corner: Name Date , Homeroom Students will be adding information about what they know about SOAR to their notebooks today. If a student doesn’t have a notebook they may use a piece of paper.

4 Goals for Today: I can explain what each letter of S/O A R stands for.
I can explain what each letter of S/O A R means. Talk through the goals for the day. You may even want your students to summaries what the goals for today are in their notebook.

5 Explain what you believe S/O – A – R Means?
What do you know?? Explain what you believe S/O – A – R Means? Have students write down in their notebook or on a piece of paper what they believe S/O A R means. After about 30 seconds to 1 minute have them turn and tell their elbow partner and see if their answers met. If all students don’t agree then have a discussion has a class. If they all agree then move to the next slide.

6 S/O A R means… S/O A R Safety/Order Achieve Respect Reflection
So S/O A R are our school rules. S/O stands for safety and order, A stands for achieve, and R stands for respect. We want our school to function with safety and order, have everyone achieve their goals for school and in life, and finally to be respectful to students, staff, our school, and our community. Have students draw a line under their observation and then draw this model.

SOAR means… Safety/Order Keep yourself and others safe while following routines and procedures. Achieve Respect Reflection S/O A R If the first top square under safety-order box, add the Hoyt’s definition. “Keep yourself and others safe while following routines and procedures.” “Safety and Order makes for an environment that is better for learning. We want everyone to follow the rules, routines, and procedures to keep the building running in a smooth way.”

Respect Reflection S/O A R In the second top square under Achieve box, add the Hoyt definition. “Always do your best both academically and socially.” “This means we want not only you but all of us to do our best. Our best is different for each other so this may look different for each person. We want us all to do our best in our studies, our school work, and in relationships we have with our peers. Remember that when we achieve we also grow.”

Respect Be kind, open-minded, and considerate with your words and actions. Reflection S/O A R In the first bottom square under Respect, add the Hoyt’s definition. “Be kind, open-minded, and considerate with your words and actions.” “Being kind means using positive and helpful words and actions. Being open-mined is to make changes and to allow difference of others’. Be flexible when something needs to change as well as someone’s culture and upbringing. Finally to be considerate is to be careful not to cause inconvenience of hurt to others with your words or actions. It also means to help other when needed.”

S/O A R Have students answer this prompt: “What is the most important rule, Safety and Order, Achieve, or Respect and Why?” Students will give their opinions and then can share with their classmates either today or tomorrow.
