Conflict Between Serbs, Slavs, and Austria-Hungary
Serbia: Eastern European independent nation Many Serbs and Slavs lived in Bosnia and they viewed Austria-Hungary as an imperialist and oppressive force Many wanted Bosnia to be free from Austria-Hungary Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary plans a visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia.

June 28, 1914 Francis Ferdinand and his wife drove through Sarajevo in a convertible. A terrorist group called The Black Hand planned an assassination During the drive, one member hurled a bomb, but it missed the Archduke and injured people in another car. Later that day, Gavrilo Princip fired two shots at Ferdinand and his wife, killing them both.

The Conflict Arises Austria sends Serbia an Ultimatum
Serbia must punish all Serbians involved in the murder and must allow Austria to partake in the investigation. They must also punish all people plotting against Austria. Serbia agrees to some aspects, but not all. This partial refusal gets Austria to declare war, and then attempt to take Serbia as they have wanted.

Domino Effect Germany promises aid to Austria because they felt the assassination of royalty was unjust. Serbia seeks aid from long time ally Russia Russia appeals to its allies, France and Great Britain. Germany demands that France remain neutral, France refuses, and Germany declares war on France.

Assignment Could WWI have been prevented had Archduke Francis Ferdinand not been assassinated? Brainstorm the reasons why or why not.
