Wanted Bosnia to be part of Serbia Heard Archduke Franz Ferdinand was visiting Bosnia Planned an assassination

4 Gavrilo Princip One of seven assassins
Target – Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria, nephew of the emperor, next in line to take the throne Ferdinand was sympathetic to Serbs and planned policies to help them

5 The Assassination First attempt did not work
Later, by accident drove near Gavrilo Princip Gavrilo shot Ferdinand and his pregnant wife, Sophie

6 The Fire Austria declares war on Serbia
Russia, ally of Serbia, declares war on Austria Germany sides with Austria …And so it begins!

7 Tinderbox A box containing tinder, flint, a steel, and other items for kindling fires A thing that is readily or easily ignited Think of Europe in 1914 as the “thing” ready to be ignited with MILITARISM, ALLIANCES, IMPERIALISM, and NATIONALISM going on. The assassination would be the “spark”

8 Tinderbox On the inside, you should have pictures describing each of the 4 MAIN causes we’ve talked about. On the outside, there should be an image depicting the “spark” that started the war. This is a PROJECT grade and is due next Tuesday, 4/6.
