1 Being on the safe side of the rules

2 Keep Clear – Someone always has to do this
The basics we all know: Keep Clear – Someone always has to do this Give room – Someone Sometimes has to do this

3 Lee bow tack: How do the rules deal with the keep clear problem?

4 “You’ve got to give them a chance, unless they put themselves there”
Important concepts / rules we need to have in our mind: Rule 15 “When a boat acquires right of way, she shall initially give the other boat room to keep clear, unless she acquires right of way because of the other boat’s actions.” Rule 16 “When a right-of-way boat changes course, she shall give the other boat room to keep clear.” “You’ve got to give them a chance, unless they put themselves there” “Don’t hunt, herd”

5 Start line hook:

6 Start line hook: Rule 15 “You’ve got to give them a chance, unless they put themselves there”

7 Making leeward marks simple
Inside boat has room unless B You get room if you’re ahead or inside at the zone edge You still have room unless you leave the zone or tack in it If your not sure, go back in time till you are sure You don’t get room if they can’t give it

8 Proper course TO the mark if you’re Right of Way Inside boat
At the Leeward mark: How much room? Room to sail to the mark and then proper course while at the mark. But….! Proper course TO the mark if you’re Right of Way Inside boat

9 Give them a chance to keep clear – if they don’t take it they will loose in the room
Don’t put yourself into a space you can’t keep clear from Be right of way at leeward marks
