1 First Grade News May 2nd – 6th 2016
We had a great time at the play on Friday. It was so much fun to attend this special event as a whole school. MARK YOUR CALENDARS! 5/2 April Reading Log Folders are due 5/4 Adventure Aquarium Field Trip. In order to attend this field trip in any way, you must have your clearances on file with the office. Please contact the office if you have any questions. 5/5 Ascension Thursday – No School 5/8 Mother’s Day Moms - I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing day! Thank you for all that you do! Enjoy your special day!  5/26 May Procession at 9am 5/30 Memorial Day- No School 6/3 Field Day 6/10 Grandparents Day Always make sure to check our school website for additional news and upcoming events. Don’t forget, we’re going to the aquarium this Wednesday. We’re looking forward to a day filled with adventure and fun! Please read the following slide for additional information on our field trip. We will not have a spelling or reading test this week.  Review previous weeks’ sight words and enjoy a good book together this week. Friendly Reminder Now that warmer weather is here, please remember to pack a water bottle daily. Healthy foods and hydration help to maintain focus in the classroom. Friendly Reminder… Reading Logs are due. Spring into a good book!

2 We’re having a ball in first grade!
This Week’s Curriculum Notes We’re having a ball in first grade! Math – We will continue to dive into more advanced addition and subtraction. Create flash cards and review the dot method of adding and subtracting with your child. A number line or a hundreds chart are also visual supports to help your child with adding and subtracting. Please practice double addition facts. These facts need to be memorized in order to efficiently solve more complex problems. Reading – This week, we will read a nonfiction book about Frogs. We will continue to learn more about some of the animals we will see at the aquarium on Wednesday The Henry and Mudge series has been such a big hit. We will continue to read this series in class this week. Phonics & Spelling – Please continue to reread Decodable Readers, poems, and sight words that have been sent home. Reviewing these will help to build fluency and reading confidence. Grammar & Writing – This week, we will revisit how to write a friendly letter. We will also respond to a variety of spring journal prompts. Religion - We will complete Chapter Fifteen, We Belong to a Parish. Social Studies and Science – All About Aquatic Animals! We are looking forward to our field trip to the Adventure Aquarium. Enrichment Ideas! We’re having a ball learning! Beach balls are an excellent way to get outside and make learning fun. Purchase a beach ball and write math facts or sight words on each stripe. Go outside and toss the ball to one another, reading the facts/words your hands land on. Enjoy Springtime Read, Relax and Have Fun Outdoors!
