The Story Of Cooking This lesson provides the children with opportunities to explore methods and sources of energy that were used in the past for cooking. The lesson provides lots of opportunities for integration with the SESE History Curriculum - Change and Continuity Qs: What has changed? What has stayed the same?

Picture 1: Hunter gatherer
Questions to promote whole class discussion: What do you see in the picture? What is Guzzler doing? How did he catch the fish? Why didn't he go to the supermarket? How is he cooking the food? What is he using? Where is he getting the energy to cook the food? Is he using electricity? Does he have a shelter over the fire? How do you know it is long ago? What time of day is it? Where does Guzzler get light? Is there a light bulb? Where will Guzzler sleep? How will he stay warm? Where did he get his clothes? What does Guzzler do for fun? (drawings on the cave wall)

Picture 2: Victorian Questions to promote whole class discussion: What do you see in the picture? What is Guzzler doing with the saucepan? Do you have a cooker like this in your house? Can you see a plug for this cooker? Does this cooker use electricity? What do you think Guzzler is cooking? How is he cooking the food? Where is he getting the energy to cook the food? Why does Guzzler need the tongs? What is the other tool on the floor? How do you know it is long ago? Where does Guzzler get light? Is there a light bulb? Where did he get his clothes? What is the difference between Guzzler's clothes and the caveman's clothes? What has stayed the same as the caveman? (Cooking food for energy, still getting energy from the fire.) What is different? (More modern kitchen, stove for cooking, container for fuel, pots and pans for cooking, etc.)

What is Guzzler cooking? How is he cooking the food? Where is he getting the energy to cook the food? Why is Guzzler wearing gloves? Where does Guzzler get light? Where did he get his clothes? Why is he wearing all these colours? What is the difference between Guzzler's clothes and the clothes in the last 2 pictures? What has stayed the same as the other pictures? (Still using energy to cook food.) What is different? (Clothes, food, furniture, colours, etc)

Picture 4: 21st century 4 items that use electricity - cooker, fridge, fan, kettle Questions for discussion What do you see in the picture? Does your kitchen look like this? Do you have a cooker like this in your house? Does this cooker use electricity? How do you know? What is above the cooker? Why does Guzzler need a fan? What are the other appliances that were not in any of the other pictures. What is Guzzler doing? Where does he keep his food? Does Guzzler keep fresh food in the presses? Why does Guzzler need a fridge? Where does the fridge get the power? Why is Guzzler wearing gloves? Where does Guzzler get light? What is the difference between this kitchen and those in the last pictures? - lots more equipment using electricity, food stored in the fridge, etc What has stayed the same as the other pictures? (Still using energy to cook food, kitchen as place to cook food, cooking equipment, etc) Do you think there are other electrical appliances that we cannot see in the kitchen?
