1 CER

2 Lets talk about air "I'm curious, is it matter? Or something else?“
Soooo what's the question here? what data do you need to answer the question, and how can you collect that data -- how they can investigate Write what students think the question should be on the board. This will be used later to make a claim.

3

4 What's the point The whole point of CER is to create an explanation to a specific question

5 Lets look at what we know about air
Ask class to provide facts they know about air and write on board. They will use this later as part of their evidence.

6 Can we make a claim Have students look at the evidence they provided and make a claim that answers the question.

7 What evidence do we have?
**Pump air into a ball and ask students to record what happens. (ball inflates because air is matter and takes up space). This is a good time to remind students that the facts they provided can be used as evidence to support their claim.

8 What reasoning do we have to make such a claim about air?

9 Example CER about air Air is matter (claim). We found that the weight of the ball increases each time we pumped more air into it (evidence). This shows that air has weight, one of the characteristics of matter (reasoning).

10 Is she a witch?

11 What are these scientists curious about -- what do they want to know?
What data did the scientist collect? Does this data

12 Is she a witch? identify the claim, the evidence, and the reasoning that connects the evidence to the villagers’ claim that the woman is a witch. Is the reasoning logical? What are some of the problems with the reasoning used?

13 Who is the greatest quarterback of all time?

14 What is the greatest movie of all time?
