Time of rebellious behavior (smoking, drinking, excessive spending) Time of new inventions and popularity of the automobile Increased sense of individualism amongst Americans Prohibition Banned sale, transportation consumption, purchase and possession of alcohol Instated by 18th Amendment Repealed by 21st Amendment “Teapot Dome” Scandal Scandal over illegal leasing of Federal oil reserves in Wyoming “Ohio Gang” – brought negative publicity on President Harding Harlem Renaissance Reawakening/increase in the amount of African American literature, art and cultural promotion in NYC during the 1920s Highlighted by jazz music, poetry and pride in AA culture Marcus Garvey Encouraged African American social, political and economic empowerment through education

Used assembly line to mass produce automobiles Made them at price available to the average American/own workers Led to rapid expansion of oil, glass and rubber industries Flappers Independent, individualistic women of the 1920’s Wanted to break female stereotypes, expectations and gender roles Organized Crime Al Capone Became rich of selling illegal liquor during Prohibition Responsible to St. Valentine’s Day Massacre Only found guilty tax evasion “Roaring 20’s” ended by 1929 Stock Market Crash and onset of Great Depression

4 Great Depression Brought on by several factors: Hoover Administration
Overproduction of manufactured goods Too much speculation on real estate and stocks Speculation – Buying stocks and other properties at a low price in anticipation that the price will rise Failure of stock market Rapid withdrawal of money from banks Hoover Administration Took a “hands off approach” to remedying the situation Believed that the economy would “fix itself” Blamed by many citizens/the poor for the economic collapse i.e. shantytowns = “Hoovervilles” i.e. newspapers = “Hoover Blankets” FDR Administration Took a much more hands on approach to fixing economy/Depression “New Deal” Collection of Federal Government programs and policies that were aimed at solving the economic problems of the Great Depression Create jobs, provide aid, fix economy and help farmers

National Recovery Administration (NRA) Responsible for establishing prices, wages and production limits National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) Suspended anti-Trust laws Allowed businesses, labor unions and the government to setting prices, wages and production limits Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) Paid farmers to not grow certain crops and/or raise certain livestock Farm Credit Administration (FCA) Allowed farmers to refinance their land and farms at a lower interest rate

6 Great Depression Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
Offered employment to men ages in the forestry service Planting trees, battling forest fires and building reservoirs Works Progress Administration (WPA) Largest of the “New Deal” programs Spent over $11 Billion, employed 8.5 million workers Built roads, highways, streets, public buildings, bridges and airports and public parks
