Snell's Law & Total Internal Reflection
By: Kara Brinson
2
refraction Refraction is caused by light passing from one medium to another and experiencing a change in speed. Refraction is responsible for image formation by lenses and the eye.
3
snell's law Snell's law is a formula used to describe the relationship between the angles of incidence and refraction. How exactly can we use Snell's Law? Since Snell's Law involves refraction, the indices of refraction of different mediums, n, are always different for each medium.
4
The Index of Refraction
describes the effect of atoms and molecules on the light as it travels through a transparent material
5
Critical Angle the minimum angle of incidence where total internal reflection takes place.
6
Total Internal Reflection
Total Internal Reflection, or TIR, is the reflection of the total amount of incident light at the boundary between two media.
7
Necessities for it to Transpire
TIR only takes place when both of the following two conditions are met the light is in a more dense medium and approaching a less dense medium the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle.
8
Fiber Optics One of the most common applications of total internal reflection is in fiber optics. An optical fiber is a thin, transparent fiber for transmitting light.
