Native Americans in the West
By the 1800s, the population had shrunk to only a few hundred thousand (mostly due to diseases brought by Europeans) Lewis & Clark encountered (met) almost 50 tribes on their expedition. Some tribes had seen Europeans before Lewis & Clark and had traded with them. Horses had been introduced to Native Americans by European traders. Before Lewis & Clark, many Native Americans had never seen people with white or black skin.
