1 Unit 8: Solution Chemistry
Lesson 1: Solutions and Conductivity

2 Important Definitions
A solution is a homogeneous mixture made up of a solvent and a solute. The solvent exists in the greater quantity, while the solute exists in the lesser quantity. A solvent is saturated with a particular solute if the solvent has dissolved as much of the solute as possible. The solubility of a solute is the maximum amount of it that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature. 10 min

6 The Conductivity of Aqueous Solutions
Predict: What will happen when potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is added to the water? Observe: Record your observations from the demonstration. Explain: The greater the concentration of ions in a solution, the greater the electrical conductivity of a solution. As the potassium permanganate dissolves, it forms ions! Demo 11.IX.5 – 15 min – test battery in advance!

7 General Rules of Conductivity*
Metals always conduct. Solids other than metals don’t conduct. Acids and bases in solution/liquid conduct. Ionic solutions/liquids conduct. All other substances don’t conduct. *There are exceptions, but these provide useful guidelines. 5 min
