Manufacturing lesson 3 Materials
2
All materials fall into 3 categories
Renewable Non Renewable and Recyclable
3
Renewable materials are those that are replaced in nature at a rate close to the rate they are used.
Some examples are
4
Nonrenewable materials, exist in fixed amounts or are used up faster than they can be replaced in nature. Some examples are
5
Environment versus economic interest
Everything that we have or want or need comes at a cost to the environment. Either one must give way to the other or we must find a balance.
6
Recyclable Materials : can be reconditioned and adapted to a new use or function
7
Individual Metal Categories FERROUS
Ferrous: Metals which contain Iron. Examples: Steel, Stainless Steel, Iron Characteristic: magnetic and sparks, contains Iron.
8
Individual Metal Categories Non Ferrous
Non Ferrous: Materials have no iron. Examples: Aluminum, Copper, Gold Characteristic: nonmagnetic and no sparks, usually elemental. Why do we care
9
Combined Metal Categories Alloy
Alloy: Mixture of 2 or more metals to incorporate the best properties of both materials in one. Examples: Brass (Copper/Zinc), Bronze (Copper/Tin)
10
Synthetic categories Common synthetic materials are nylon, acrylic, polyester, carbon fiber, rayon and spandex. Synthetic materials are made from chemicals and are usually based on polymers
11
Plastics Thermal Plastic
Thermal Plastic: Are the plastics that do not undergo chemical change in their composition when heated and can be molded again and again…They can be recycled!
12
Plastics Thermoset Thermoset: Can melt and take shape only once; after they have solidified, they stay solid. Think of thermosets like a cake. If you bake a cake and aren’t happy with it, you cannot put it back in the oven, heat it and expect to reshape it.
13
Ceramics Ceramic: Inorganic, nonmetallic material that can be shaped and hardened through heating.
14
a composite is a non metallic material made from two or more different materials combined together.
examples of composites are
15
non-composites or natural materials, are single materials.
examples of non-composites are
