What are the physical properties?
2
What is a Mixture?
3
Mixture Can see the separate parts Two or more materials combined
Can usually take it apart physically. Is NOT chemically combined (completely different substances)
4
You can separate the sand from the water by filtering.
Mixture + = sand water You can separate the sand from the water by filtering.
5
Examples?
6
What is a solution? A solution can exist in any state: Solid-
Brass is a solid solution. Brass is an alloy (a homogenous mixture) of copper and zinc. Liquid Sugar water is a liquid solution. Sugar water is a homogenous mixture of sugar and water. Gas Air is a gaseous solution. Air is a homogenous solution of nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.
7
Solution A solution is a mixture of two or more substances.
Lemonade blood air ceramic A solution is a mixture of two or more substances. Different parts are EVENLY (dispersed) mixed and hard to see. Harder to separate the parts. Can exist in all states of matter: liquid, solid and gas
8
Looking at Solutions Flavored drinks Chocolate milk Cement
What makes these solutions?
9
Comparing a Mixture and Solution
+ + sand water sugar water The sugar is dissolved in the water. The sugar particles are evenly distributed in the water. You can separate the sand from the water by filtering.
