This created a small class of rich and powerful Nobles (Dukes, Earls, Barons, Counts) and a large class of poor peasants with no land of their own. Many went to America to seek land and opportunity. A system of government where a king “rents” his land in return for military service and money FEUDALISM CRUSADES 1100’s-1300’s RENAISSANCE 1300’S-1600’s MARTIN LUTHER ( ) KING HENRY VIII ( ) CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS Religious wars between European Catholics and Middle Eastern Muslims for control of the Holy Land (modern-day Israel) It eventually began profitable trade between Europe and Asia- led European nations to seek a new sea-route to the East. A time of increased learning of ancient Greek and Roman art, philosophy, and science in Europe. People became more intelligent and artistic and began to question the tyranny of the Catholic Church and the Monarchies of Europe. He started the Protestant Christian movement in Europe. This movement eventually spread all over Europe and to North America and still remains. German priest that challenged many unholy and corrupt practices of the Catholic Church. King of England that evicted the Catholic Church and started his own church, the Church of England, aka the Anglican Church. This started the Protestant (non-Catholic Christianity) Religion in England and was brought to North America by the Puritans and Pilgrims. 1492: Italian sailor hired by Spain that accidentally discovered the Americas. His voyages began the era of European exploration, colonization, and competition in North and South America.
