Lesson 2 - Experiment 1. Identification of gases k. carry out and interpret the results of simple test tube reactions, such as displacements, reactions of acids, precipitations, to relate the observations to the state symbols used in equations and to practise writing full and ionic equations. 2 Method – (Record your observations in a suitable table)
Action of heat on Copper(II) carbonate Heat a few g of the solid in a boiling tube fitted with a bung and delivery tube. Bubble the gas produced through limewater. 2. Action of heat on a Group 1 metal nitrate Strongly heat a few g of the solid in a test tube. Test the gas evolved with a glowing splint. (Note: a metal nitrite is formed.) 3. Action of heat on a non-Group 1 metal nitrate Strongly heat a few g of the solid in a test tube. Test the gas evolved with a glowing splint. (Note: a metal oxide is formed.) 4. Action of heat on hydrated copper(II) sulphate CuSO4.5H2O with cobalt chloride paper. 5. Reaction between ammonium chloride and sodium hydroxide soln. Dissolve a few g of ammonium chloride in 1/3 boiling tube of NaOH soln. Then gently warm the mixture and test the gas evolved using moist red litmus paper. Write word and symbol equations for the reactions seen.
