1 Atoms, Elements, and compounds

2 Learning Goals Review what you know about matters
Understand the Particle Theory of Matter Understand different types of matters

3 What’s the matter?

4 What’s the matter? Anything that has mass and occupies space

5 Let’s find different types of matter

6 What are matters made up of?

7 Ancient Greeks were curious about this too!
Democritus c. 460 – c. 370 BC Meaning “chosen of the people” Asked “what is everything made of?” Everything is made up of tiny things are “indivisible” If we cannot divide something, that must be “atoms” and must be building block of everything In Greek, the word “Atomos” means indivisible in Greek!

9 What are matters made up of?
They are made up of particles and atoms! The Big Bang Theory created matters and particles, which created the universe….including us!

10 What else do we know about particles?
Kahoot time!

11 The Particle Theory of Matter
#1 All matters are made up of tiny atoms #2 Each pure substance has its own kind of particles, which is different from the particles of other pure substances #3 Atoms are always moving #4 Atoms attract each other #5 Atoms at a higher temperature move faster than atoms at a lower temperature

12 Matter Matter Pure Substance Mixture

13 Matter Pure Substance Contains only one kind of particles Mixture
Example: Pure water Mixture Contains more than one kind of particles Example: Cup of hot chocolate

14 Matter Matter Pure Substance Mixture Mechanical Mixture Solution

15 Mixture Mechanical Mixture (heterogeneous mixture)
Contains more than one kind of particles that can be seen as separate Example: Water and oil Solution (homogeneous mixture) Contains more than one kind of particles but appears as one Example: Water and food colouring

16 Matter Matter Pure Substance Mixture Element Compound
Mechanical Mixture Solution

17 Pure Substance Element
Pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler parts Example: Aluminum Compound Pure substance made of two or more different elements Example: Table Salt aka. Sodium chloride (NaCl)

18 What’s the difference? Hold on…. Mixture
Contains more than one kind of particles Compound Pure substance made of two or more different elements What’s the difference?

19 Mixtures vs. Compound Mixtures can be separated into two or more parts by physical methods Example: filtering, boiling, separating with hands Compounds are formed by chemical bonds between two different elements and can only be separated chemically Example: Ionic bonds, Covalent bonds (You will learn these later in the unit!)
