2 Development Throughout Life
Lifespan development- growth and change that occurs throughout a person’s life. Every aspect of life involves ongoing growth and development. Studying human development will help you better understand yourself and those around you.

3 Areas of Development Physical Intellectual/Cognitive Emotional Social

4 Physical Development Changes in appearance, strength, and coordination. Involves motor skills, or muscle movements. Gross motor skills – large motor skills – skills that use the large muscles of the body like the legs and shoulders. *Used to walk, run, swim, jump, lift Fine motor skills Small motor skills Skills involving the smaller muscles like in the fingers *Used to write, type, play instruments, use scissors

5 Intellectual/Cognitive Development
Involves your ability to think, understand, reason, and communicate. Intelligence can be seen in many ways, such as musical talent, creative skills, problem-solving abilities. Different learning styles: Auditory Visual Kinesthetic

6 Emotional Development
Babies typically express happiness, sadness, and discomfort. As children mature, they learn to recognize and express more emotions. We also learn to better handle our emotions in socially acceptable ways.

7 Social Development Involves learning to relate to other people.
Children start to develop social skills at a young age; more complex social skills develop over time. Temperament – inborn style of reacting to the world and relating to others. A person’s basic temperament is inherited and lasts throughout their lives. This does not however lock you into a specific behavior.

8 Moral Development Very young children have no sense of right or wrong and are guided by their need for self satisfaction. With guidance, children learn what are acceptable behaviors, and how their behaviors can affect others. Moral development is vital for society…society is weakened when people do not consider others.

9 Developmental Theories
Sigmund Freud – 5 stages of psychosocial development Personality develops through a series of stages…experiences in childhood profoundly affect a person’s adult life. Abraham Maslow – Hierarchy of Needs People have hierarchy of needs…can only develop to their fullest potential if their needs are met.

10 Influences on Development
Heredity Genes determine physical traits such as eye and hair color, height, and build Environment The people, places and things that surround and influence a person Home life Living conditions Economic status Access to health care Culture Traditions Level of education
