Six Requirements of Life
An ORGANISM is any form of life that has all 6 Characteristics of Life.
2
1 Made of Cells EX: Uni-cellular or Multi-cellular
Plant Cells or Animal Cells
3
2 Obtain & Use Energy / Metabolism
METABOLISM is the sum of physical & chemical processes in an organism. EX: Ingest (Consumer or Producer?) Digest (Break down food molecules) Respiration/Photosynthesis Excretion (Get rid of waste) Make Energy (Mitochondria)
4
2 Obtain & Use Energy / Metabolism
EXAMPLES
5
3 Grow & Develop EX: Physical Growth or Life Cycles
6
4 Reproduce EX: Sexual or Asexual (lay eggs, seeds, live birth, pollination) Pass on Genetic Information
7
5 Respond to the Environment
EX: Internally or Externally Animals sweat or shiver Plants wilt or freeze
8
6 Adapt to their Environment
EX: Camouflage protects prey from predators, Wax coats protects against water loss.
9
Anything that can carry out ALL 6 characteristics of life.
Living Things Anything that can carry out ALL 6 characteristics of life. 1. Made of Cells 2. Obtain & Use Energy 3. Grows & Develops 4. Reproduce (passes genetic information) 5. Responds to the environment 6. Adapts to the environment
10
Once Living (DEAD) Something that at one point was part of a living thing. Has dead cells Examples: stick, cotton, leaf, shell
11
NON-Living (Never been alive)
NEVER part of a living thing, thus cannot pass genetic information. Examples: water, air, rock, dirt
