Maps Discuss: When do we use maps? Why do we use maps?

Atlases are… …books of maps and other information. Atlas is a famous man’s name. Atlas was a Greek god who was forced to carry the world on his shoulders. Discuss: What kind of information is found in an atlas? Have you used an atlas in the past? When and why?

Marks on a map are based on: space (area) content (meaning)
Discuss: What is the main goal of a map? What are the basic elements of a map?

Maps represent things in three ways:
1. points ex. Cities 2. lines ex. rivers and borders 3. area ex. where people live, deserts

Maps tell us about … People Land
-where people live -what’s in the land -where people go -what the land looks like -what people do -who controls the land -what people believe -how high it is

The three types of maps are…
political map- shows cities, provincial and international borders 2. physical map- show land forms such as rivers, lakes and mountains 3. topographic map- shows both physical and political map characteristics
