…books of maps and other information. Atlas is a famous man’s name. Atlas was a Greek god who was forced to carry the world on his shoulders.

What kind of information is found in an atlas?
Have you used an atlas in the past?
When and why?

4. Marks on a map are based on: space (area) content (meaning)
Discuss:
What is the main goal of a map?
What are the basic elements of a map?

5. Maps represent things in three ways:
1. points ex. Cities
2. lines ex. rivers and borders
3. area ex. where people live, deserts

6. Maps tell us about … People Land
-where people live -what’s in the land
-where people go -what the land looks like
-what people do -who controls the land
-what people believe -how high it is

7. The three types of maps are…
political map-
shows cities, provincial and international borders
2. physical map-
show land forms such as rivers, lakes and mountains
3. topographic map-
shows both physical and political map characteristics
