Aim: How did Italy become unified?

Nationalism is the belief that people should be loyal to their nation rather than to an empire—to the people with whom they share a culture and history Do NOW – How can nationalism be positive and negative?

Nationalist in Italy Italians were inspired by the French Revolution.
Congress of Vienna kept Italy separated. Austria controlled portions of northern Italy. Other independent states kept unification hard to do. A group of Italian tried to keep it alive. This group was called the Risorgimento ”resurgence”.

Giuseppe Mazzini- the Soul
Formed the Young Italy movement. Wants Italy to unify – “without unity there is no strength” Nation-States were best hope for justice, democracy and peace 1848 revolts against the Austrians but by 1849 Austrians in control

Cavour- the Brain Sardinia was ruled by King Victor Emmanuel II.
Chief Minister was Camillo Cavour -1852 Goals- Wanted to expand Sardinian territory. Wanted to lead in uniting Italy. He strengthened the military and Industry. Allied with France and England.

War with Austria Sardinia provoked Austria to war and France sent troops to help. Austria was quickly defeated in Italy.

Garibaldi – the Sword Southern half of Italy was made up of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Giuseppe Garibaldi was leader of nationalistic movement. Formed and army of 1,000 men and captured Sicily and Naples. LOOK AT CARTOON – Garibaldi steps aside to let Victor Emmanuel II rule.

Problems of Unification
1866 – Venetia added, Papal States added. Few Italians had experienced self-government. There were cultural differences between the south and north. North was more industrial and south agricultural.

Question In the 1800s, revolutionaries often fought with inferior weapons and scarce supplies. How do you think nationalism might help revolutionaries over come the disadvantages of old weapons and poor supplies to win a war for national independence? Use specific details in your answer.
