MAPPING THE EARTH
2
Latitude Horizontal, East to West lines dividing the Earth
Equator - O degrees latitude Runs through the center of the Earth
3
Longitude Vertical, North to South lines dividing the Earth
Prime Meridian - 0 degrees longitude International Dateline degrees longitude
4
How Many Time Zones??? 24
5
Why do we need time zones?
We have to keep the rotation of Earth in relation to the sun constant
6
Topographic (Contour) Maps
Show changes in the Earth’s elevation by using contour lines
7
How to read a contour map
The closer the lines are together, the more the slope is changing, and the steeper the slope.
8
How to read a contour map
The farther the lines are apart, the less the slope is changing, and the more gradual the slope.
9
Take a closer look If there is a river… lines point upstream
river flows against arrows
10
How can you tell the elevation?
The lines increase in a pattern. Ex. 10’s, 20’s, 100’s
