When: February 1779 Who: Led by Colonel Elijah Clarke (after whom Clarke County is named) What: defeated a group of about British Troops Where: Located about eight miles from Washington, Georgia Why Is this important: It broke the British stronghold in Georgia, Morale is improved and the spoils of the battle are given to the Georgians

4 The siege of savannah Key vocabulary: Siege: occurs when forces try to capture a fortified fort or town by surrounding it and preventing any supplies from reaching it. When: September 1779 What: two French ships and 4000 soldiers arrived to join American troops to try and take savannah from the british Where: Off the coast of tybee island, near savannah Final outcome: americans lost and the british held savannah for the next three years

5 Siege of Savannah Key facts:
Second bloodiest battle of the American Revolution It only lasted 90 minutes, but led to many deaths The british finally withdrew from savannah in 1782

Served as a patriot in the battle of kettle creek There is some debate as to whether he was freeborn or a slave Granted permission to fight in the war General assembly gave him his freedom and land

7 NaNcy Hart Soldiers showed up and demand that she feed them. Nancy was able to get them intoxicated and she hid their weapons. As a result of this, she killed one and wounded one Hart county is named in her honor as well as the town of hartwell. **ONLY county in Georgia named for a woman.

8 The Battle of Yorktown In june 1781, clark was once again over the Georgia militia With the help of the continental army, took Augusta from the british The French helped the continental army when they met the british in Yorktown The American forces won that battle, forcing Cornwallis(Leader of the British) to surrender.
