“Us and Them” Survey the Text
Based on the title, author and reading the 1st and last paragraphs, what do you think the article will be about?
4
“Us and Them” Read through the article one time to identify characters that demonstrate characteristics of either lifters or leaners
5
“Us and Them” Read through Highlight lifters with one highlighter color (yellow) and leaners with another (pink)

7
During the Seminar: Be prepared to participate; quality is diminished when participants don’t prepare or don’t speak at all When appropriate, refer to the text Ask for clarification when you’re confused Take turns speaking instead of raising hands Listen carefully and actively Show respect for differing ideas, thoughts and values Give evidence and examples to support your responses
8
Reflection: 1. What is your overall understanding of the topic?
2. What did we do well as a class? 3. What can we work on?

Service Learning Definition
Service learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning.
15
Agree Disagree Service learning should be required for high school graduation
16
Components of Service Learning
Service learning must include preparation, action, and reflection. Students work with their teachers and members of the community to identify key issues that impact the community. Students select a type of action and plan their actual project. Students take action by actually embarking on the task that they have designed through direct service, indirect service, and advocacy. Finally, students reflect on their experience reviewing what they have learned.
17
Essential Question: If service learning did become a graduation requirement, what topic/issue/cause would I focus on in order to ensure engagement, ownership, and positive change?
18
In Groups of 4: Discuss problems in our community and school and write a list of possible areas of need Be prepared to share with the class…
19
Suggestions for Service Learning Projects:
In groups of 4, look over Suggestions for Service Learning Projects Each group member read through a page and analyze the quality, value and impact of the various projects described Share your findings with your group
20
Think of ways you can give back, which connect to your own deeper meaning
21
Think of a topic that you would like to explore as possible service learning projects
Share with your group
22
Groups of four: Look at your poster which is one area of need in our community. In your group, brainstorm possible ways to help this group of people, and write them down. You will have two minutes at each station to add ideas.
23
Service Learning Carousel
Do a carousel walk looking at the class’ ideas Put your name on the one you want to work on
24
Picking your topic You may work on a project individually, or you may work in groups of four. Once you have decided on a group and who you are working with, please complete the organization worksheet attached.
25
Once you have narrowed down your topic, you need to:
Come up with the following: Topic Essential Question Possible Community Service Action or Culminating Project
26
Work on planning sheet.
27
Service Learning Project Proposal Form
Look at the form identify a general category that the topic of their project falls under.
28
Developing the Essential Question
The first step in the research process is the creation of an Essential Question to help direct your research. Good Essential Questions require you to do four or more of the following: Develop a plan or course of action Make a decision Consult multiple sources, both primary and secondary Synthesize information in order to develop an answer Develop an answer that is controversial, arguable, or open to interpretation Construct an answer that doesn’t exist yet
29
Look at your Service Learning Proposal and the notes on it
What do you need to research in order to know the need? And to provide a solution to the problem? What are the next steps?
