14 Pick one of the following options and write a well-developed essay.
Option #1: Author John Steinbeck often uses animal imagery when discussing/describing Lennie. Why do you think Steinbeck chose to use these images? What point was he trying to make to the reader about this character and, to a larger extent, about the working class people of the time? Option #2: Sunlight and darkness are important elements in the novel. Steinbeck uses these elements as both foreshadowing and symbolism. Option #3: Many of the characters in the novel are isolated and openly discuss their feelings of loneliness. Choose three characters and examine how Steinbeck uses them to help deliver his greater message to the reader. Why do you think Steinbeck chose to use these images? 25 Friday October 30, 2015 Do Now: On a dark, stormy Halloween night, four kids named Luke, John, Sarah and Bob walk into a haunted house during a blackout. Only one can escape. They take a staircase to the second floor, a trapdoor on the left, then go up the ladder to the right, followed by a 28-foot slide to the basement through the mouth of a Giant Panda. In one corner of the murky cellar is a chainsaw, a dagger, a rope with a noose and an electric chair. Written on the wall in blood are the words, “Only one will survive – choose your death!” Bob takes the rope, Sarah picks up the dagger, John chooses the chainsaw and Luke uses the chair.
