Cellular Energy

Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration chemical reactions (Remember… conservation of matter.) Oxidized? Reduced? 6 CO2 + 6 H2O  C6H12O6 + 6 O2 + Heat Photosynthesis C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6H2O + Heat + Free E Cellular Respiration

ATP Structure

Process of Cellular Respiration

Mitochondria Structure

Pyruvate Conversion Remember, this happens for each Pyruvate (There are 2)

Kreb’s Cycle Simplified All about making electron carriers

Electron Transport Chain is located on the inner FOLDED membrane

Electron Transport Chain moves 2 electrons at a time toward Oxygen (Proteins are H+ Pumps)

Why oxygen? ***Oxygen is the most electronegative (what did this word mean?) element in living organisms. This means that the electrons can “fall” through more molecules releasing more kinetic energy. Combining hydrogen to oxygen at the end of the ETC makes water (which is why you can see moisture if you breathe on glass).

Pumping H+ into a confined space See the H+ being pumped by the purple proteins into the orange confined space?

ATP Synthetase Complex Use the kinetic movement of protons (H+) to power the phosphorylation of ADP  ATP.

Electron Transport Chain and Chemiosmosis Similarities and differences for mitochondria and chloroplasts

If Oxygen is not present?

Alcohol Fermentation To free up the electron carrier NADH

Lactic Acid Fermentation To free up the electron carrier NADH
