Presentation on theme: "Types of Chemical Reactions (6)"— Presentation transcript:

1 Types of Chemical Reactions (6)
Chemical reactions are classed into 6 main types. The next 6 slides reviews very briefly each type.

2 Synthesis Reaction 2 or more simple substances form a more complex one. Sometimes called a combination reaction. Ex) A + B  AB or A + BC  ABC 2Na + Cl2  2NaCl

3 Decomposition Reactions
a more complex substance breaks down into 2 or more simple substances. Example ABC  A + BC or ABC  AB + C or etc H2CO3  H2O + CO2

4 Single Replacement Reaction
Sometimes called Single Displacement.     1 element replaces another in a compound. Example A + BC  AC + B or A + BC  BA + C 2Na + 2H2O  2NaOH + H2

5 Double Replacement Reaction
Sometimes called Double Displacement. different atoms in 2 different compounds replace each other. Example AB + CD  AD + CB MgCO HCl  MgCl H2CO3

6 Neutralization Reaction
Often incorrectly called water forming an acid + base react to produce water and a salt (special type of Double Replacement Reaction) example HA + BOH  H2O + BA HCl + NaOH  H2O + NaCl

7 (Organic)Combustion Reaction
Sometimes classified as a special type of decomposition. Organic compound (contains CH sometimes O or S) and oxygen react to produce CO2 and H2O. Examples CH O2  CO2 + H2O CHO O2  CO2 + H2O CHOS + O2  CO2 + H2O + SO2 CH O2  CO2 + 2H2O

8 The end of types of reactions!!
