5 Numbered Heads Together
Students number off based on their seat number Teach poses a problem and gives think time (“PENCILS DOWN”) “PENCILS UP” - Students privately write their answers (SOLO, INDIVIDUALLY) Students STAND UP from their chairs to put their heads together, show answers to each other, discuss, and teach Students SIT DOWN when everyone knows the answer or has something to share Teacher calls a number. The students with that number from each team answers simultaneously by standing up and displaying their paper. Teammates praise student who responded Students are in teams of 4. They are numbered based on the seat they are sitting in- (if you have 3 or 5 this the same would still apply as they would already know what seat they are sitting in) You ask a question/pull a question up on the screen/etc and give them think time. During this time their caps should be on their markers. When you are teaching this structure (not using content) make sure to emphasize the importance of just listening and thinking during this time. Teacher says, “Caps off” ( could add in “belly write” “independent write” or whatever cutesy little saying you want here) Students independently work- this is the INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY and EQUAL PARTICIAPATION When you see that most students have completed their thoughts you say “Heads Together” this is the simultaneous interaction, positive interdependence. They must be STANDING up, out of seats while they are discussing and they CANNOT sit until they have come to a consensus. If you notice most groups are finishing you can say “10 more seconds” or something like that to get everyone done All Students sit silently. Teacher calls on one number to stand. That person from each team stands. They then show the teacher the answer simultaneously- either choral, sign language, 1-4 fingers, other signal, whiteboard, or choice card When students sit back down the other members of the team praise them for sharing. Begin again.
