2. Challenge
Our challenge was to make clothes out of old clothes as a way to help other people understand that you don’t have to throw away old clothes to get something new out of it. The average American throws away 65 pounds worth of clothing each year, now multiply that by 324,801,475 (population of America). That’s around 21,112,095,875 pounds of clothes that end up in landfills each year. Also, the average American has 35 t-shirts, it takes 400 gallons of water to make one shirt, you do the math this time. Since most industries run on our belief that once we must have something new for each season (toys and clothes), we have become a society that is constantly throwing things away, constantly making new things out of resources that we don’t have. Most of us live on this planet thinking that the things we buy won’t impact the earth, so our  challenge was to try and help inspire others to buy fewer clothes and really think about the environmental impact our shopping habits have on the earth.

6. Challenges That I faced Along the way
Explanations/ Solutions:
Piece 1- I decided to make a jacket/cover-up by using one of my dad’s old work shirts and a panel of lace from an old gown. One of the challenges that I faced was that there was not enough lace to cover the whole back panel and reach the bottom of the shirt so I decided to shorten the length of the shirt and make the panel a triangular shaped one.
Piece 2-For the second piece, I wanted to make a choker necklace. So I used the scalloped/ lace hem of an old dress as the body and a broken necklace as the clasp. The problem was, since the chain was so fine and thin, I couldn’t get the needle through and I didn’t want the thread to be overlapping the chain. So instead I used a fishing line and I sewed over the chain.
Piece 3-The third piece was probably the most problematic since I started out with a bright green t-shirt and I wanted it to be black. But since I didn’t have any dye, I tried to use Chinese ink to stain the shirt but sadly the ink washed off completely. After that I tried to bleach the shirt but instead it just got the remaining ink out of the shirt. So in the end, I decided to dig up an old black shirt and used it to make the shirt.
