Behavioural Physical emotional outbursts, anger, frustration erratic and out-of-character behaviour withdrawn from colleagues frequent unplanned absences and lateness poor performance, unable to complete tasks difficulty concentrating and making decisions, lack of confidence frequent workplace grievances tired all the time, difficulty sleeping sick and run down headaches musculo-skeletal complaints reduced reaction times weight loss or gain dishevelled appearance gastro-intestinal disorders

Employers should apply the risk management process to control factors which may contribute to work-related stress.

Situational analysis – look for the information your business has available Survey employees Run focus groups Focus on your areas of highest risk Obtain leadership support Integrate into existing processes

Create a culture that supports staff to be open about their mental health
Encourage leaders to talk openly about mental health Avoid and reduce stigma associated with mental health Establish a clear mental health strategy and specific policies to ensure employees experiencing mental health problems get the support they need straight away Clearly state mental health will be treated in the same way as physical health Focus on mental health literacy Be proactive – and patient. Culture change takes time

4. Support someone experiencing a mental health problem
‘A staff member disclosed she had anxiety. She required no adjustments except at those times when she was becoming anxious. Her anxiety affected her short term memory. At these times, I would repeat requests, check she understood and provide the request in writing, as agreed with her.’
