What is Plasma?
2
Plasma is the fourth state of matter.
Plasmas are the most common state of matter in the universe.
3
Plasma is an ionized gas
A plasma is a gas that has been energized to the point that some of the electrons break free.
4
All matter is composed of atoms which are neutral
All matter is composed of atoms which are neutral. That means they do not carry any electrical charge. Sometimes heating to extreme temperature will cause the outermost electrons to get knocked off. These electrons will then knock off electrons from neighboring atoms. This creates a mass of ionized matter, which is called plasma.
5
How do you know plasma is real if you can't see it?
6
You can see the energy (light) given off by a plasma.
7
Where is plasma found?
9
A lot in outer space are made of plasma—the space between stars, planets and galaxies, and nebulas.
12
Interactions between plasma and Earth’s magnetic fields can have spectacular results.
13
Why are we interested in plasmas?
Plasmas are a potential source of safe, abundant energy. Understanding plasmas helps us understand stars. Plasmas can be used to build computer chips and other technology.
14
What is plasma used for? Scientists and engineers have utilized plasmas for many decades. Plasma is used for welding and cutting metal, sterilizing medical instruments, lighting homes and industries, cleaning up pollution, purifying contaminated water and treating harmful wastes.
