Home Learning There is absolutely no evidence of any academic benefit from assigning homework in primary school. In particular, especially for young children, there is no correlation between whether children do homework (or how much they do), and any meaningful measure of achievement. (Alfie Kohn, The Homework Myth 2016).

Expectations Reading a MINIMUM of four nights per week totaling minutes each night. Tasks requiring completion may be sent home throughout the year. Assisting your child with mental computation incidentally as well as through direct instruction. If your child requires further consolidation of topics your child’s teacher will let you know. Sarah M

Prime Mathematics Built on the teachings of high performing nations of Singapore, Hong Kong and Korea – it covered the Australian Curriculum. Carefully sequenced concept development. Explicit teaching to model mathematical thinking. Explicit problem solving is central – including using the ‘bar model’ and other approaches. NAPLAN The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’) of: Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) Reading Writing Numeracy. NAPLAN will be complete online from Week 3 15th-25th May Sarah M

Friendly Schools Program/ MJR
Centred on the belief that we are all God’s children and are called to try to be like Jesus Christ in the way we live. The phrases ‘MJR’ and ‘What would Jesus do?’ are used in and out of the classroom. Children who display positive behaviours are acknowledged with recognition and house points. Friendly Schools School wide initiative to designed to enhance children’s social and emotional understandings and competencies. The Big Write/VCOP This happens once a week and using all the skills they have learnt the children are encouraged to write at length. The lighting is sometimes changed and music is played softly in the background. Children are encouraged to write at length without interruption. They are building their stamina Tasha

So how does Big Writing work?
Ros Wilson developed a way of teaching writing to children which focuses on four main aspects of writing: Vocabulary Connectives, Openers Punctuation VCOP Tasha

Diana Rigg Spelling Focus of the program is Phonological Awareness (the sounds different letters make) Placement test completed by child at point in time. Activities and strategies outlined by Diana Rigg used in class daily. LSCWC completed daily. Focus on dictation. Tasha
