12 Idea 4: Dear Sam, Torn Using English language magazines in class
I’m at a crossroads in my relationship and in life. I’ve recently embarked on a new career, something that I’ve wanted to do since I was young. It’s more than a career, it’s a passion. The problem is that it requires a lot of travel and time away from my girlfriend, and the distance is starting to weigh on our relationship. We’ve been together for almost a decade and have never spent this much time apart but she doesn’t want to be in that type of relationship. I’m torn between two loves: my career, something that brings me joy, and the person I want to spend my life with. How do I reconcile the two? Thanks for your help on this seemingly insurmountable issue,  Torn Warmer: Who do you usually ask for advice when you have a personal problem? Explain concept of coaching column to students. Then hand out ‚problem‘ and give studnets time to read. After that, sts turn over page and retell problem from memory (concept check). Then discuss possible solutions in small groups. Write an answer to Torn. Each group reads out their advice. Then give students Sams advice. Do you they agree with her?
