Native Americans By: Adam A. Jonathan C. Thomas H. Mia T.

2 Introduction The Native American Civil Rights Movements grew during the 1960s. The primary goals of the movement were too focused on unemployment, fair housing and discrimination.

3 Discrimination !

4 The use of a mascot reinforces the marginalization of Native Americans by oversimplifying their culture.

5

6 Alcatraz Island

7 From November 20, 1969 to June 11, 1971, Native Americans took over and held Alcatraz Island as Indian Land. They were left with no fresh running water, inadequate sanitation facilities, no oil or mineral rights, and unemployment.

8

9 The Occupation of Alcatraz Island was led by the Native American group, Indians of all Tribes.
The takeover lasted 14 months and when it ended the Indians were forcibly removed by the federal government. Even though they had their own land before being removed, they were still isolated from modern facilities and had no industry which meant unemployment was high.

14 Important Committees That Helped Support Native Americans !

15 National Indian Brotherhood!

16 National Indian Brotherhood
The National Indian Brotherhood, replaced the Canadian National Indian Brotherhood in the 1980s. Their goals were to protect and advance the treaty of First Nations in Canada. In April 1982 they held their first meeting.

17 Assembly of First Nations !

18 Assembly of First Nations
The Assembly of First Nations was created in 1982 as a result to restore chiefs as the voice of the First Nations. The AFN was a political organization that represented citizens in Canada and advocated on behalf of the First Nations on issues such as treaties, indigenous rights, as well as land and resources.

19 National Indian Youth Council !

20 National Indian Youth Council
The National Indian Youth Council (NIYC) focused on environmental concerns. It was developed in 1961 by young American Indians who were in college or just graduated. It was the first independent Native American student organization that took direct action protest to pursue any goals that they had. They also tried to improve public education and job training for all Native Americans. The NIYC wanted to educate the public about their issues and concerns.

21 In the 1960s, the NIYC acted as a civil rights organization that was active in the movement of making sure they preserve tribals rights to fish in the northwest. They focused on environmental concerns and aided tribes that were suffering from the adverse effects of contamination of coal strip mining and uranium mining in the 1970s.

22 Overview !

23 Native Americans suffered from social and economic problems and as victims of long-term discrimination. Another issue that they faced was the ability to pass down traditions such as religious beliefs, languages, and social practices without being discriminated. They struggled with an ongoing battle of not having the right to vote, the stereotypes and racism against the Native American Indians.
