BACKGROUND OF MAKHULONG A MATALA
A community development subsidiary of Johannesburg Housing Company (JHC). Established in 1999 as a Community Dev. Dept and Established into a subsidiary in 2004: To identify the specific costs of these programmes in order to ensure long term sustainability of programmes To take advantage of tax incentives available to donor funders As an opportunity to raise funds for the activities

Opportunities – unintended Consequences
Facilitated the establishment of entrepreneurs Food gardens programme and the Soccer programme Makhulong contracted Jozi Food Farmer (JFF) to facilitate the food gardens project. Tenant at Brickfields and participated as food garden member Observed the dedication and the skill applied to growing vegetables under difficult circumstances. - Makhulong had a vision to invest in the local knowledge and when the opportunity presented itself – they were the perfect match to take the food gardens to the next level.

Registered Company operated as a sole proprietor Makhulong assisted him to get his compliance documents in order JFF has since employed 3 youth from JHC buildings to educate other tenants on establishing and maintaining food gardens. They are Nomsa Radebe (Brickfields); Khothatso Mogolotlane (Legae); George Mbuli (Towerhill). Lake Success Food Garden

Opportunities – unintended Consequences
Bursaries for JHC kids The JHC awarded Bursaries to two beneficiaries, kids of JHC Tenants starting in the last financial year. These were awarded for Artisan skills - Plumbing course and the other for civil engineering JHC also provides holiday work and we are looking for internship opportunities with accredited organisations or companies. These were aimed at providing opportunities which might lead to employability for the beneficiaries.

Soccer programme We have employed another tenant as a soccer service provider He was a former Makhulong senior soccer programme member He employs about 10 part time coaches to conduct soccer clinics over the weekend with the JHC kids

Makhulong works with tenant volunteers in the buildings The CDFs are trained to better manage problems related to community development in their buildings e.g. kids issues They promote and market community development programmes in the buildings Makhulong has about 21 Community Development Facilitators They are on a permanent part time employment with Makhulong and they earn a monthly stipend Makhulong has to date placed five volunteers in permanent employment positions Two in neighbourhood development and three with Makhulong
