Lesson Objective: Students will be able to differentiate between the motions of divergent, convergent, and transform plate boundaries
2
Why do tectonic plates cause landforms and natural disasters?
3
I project this image on the board and have students hypothesize what each dot represents. I then ask them to look for a specific pattern as to where they are located (along the red lines signifying the different plates).
4
Plate Boundaries: A “plate boundary” is the border between two tectonic plates.
5
3 Types of Plate Boundaries
Divergent boundary. Convergent boundary. Transform boundary.
6
Divergent Boundaries:
Two plates slide away from each other.
7
Divergent Boundaries:
Where plates move apart, mid-ocean ridges or rift valleys are formed.

Rift Valley, Ecuador
11
Convergent Boundaries:
Two plates slide towards each other.
12
Convergent Boundaries:
Plates colliding create either mountains OR trenches.

17
Transform Boundaries Two plates slide past each other.
18
Transform Boundaries:
Plates sliding past each other cause earthquakes.
19
Sometimes, earthquakes can cause “tsunamis” or giant waves!

Game Time! For each type of plate, there is a hand motion that you are going to learn You are then going to find a partner When I call out the name of the plate I want the hand motion for, the partner who gets it will move on to the next partner. The winner of the whole class will go against me. If you beat me, you win a prize.
