The causes of earthquake and volcanoes
Learning Objective To be able to explain why earthquakes and volcanoes occur Success Criteria To identify that the Earths plates move in four ways To describe what happens at a plate boundary
2
The earth is divided into three section
1) Crust 2) Mantle (magma/ molten rock) 3) Outer/ Inner core
3
Two types of Earth crust
Continental crust – Thick but light 2) Oceanic crust – Thin but dense (heavy)
4
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ARROWS ARE SHOWING???
The earths crust is divided into a number of tectonic plates WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ARROWS ARE SHOWING???
5
Plates move in different directions
Plates move in different directions. Match the diagram with the correct caption Plates move towards each other Plates move away from each other Plates slide past each other Plate slides under another plate
6
Success Criteria To identify that the Earths plates move in four ways

Destructive plate boundary
15
TASKS – Read the information
Complete the worksheet ‘Description of what is happening at the plate boundary’ section Complete the ‘Hazard found’ section Complete the ‘Example of plate movement’
16
To describe what happens at a plate boundary
