1 Warm UP What is a tide? What causes tides?
Earths tilt is how many degrees? What is your favorite season? When is the first day of Winter and why is it THAT specific day each year?

2 Agenda Warm up YET Day and night Seasons It’s a phase Surfs Up!
Rotate! Or is it revolve? Exit Ticket

3 Yesterday’s Exit Ticket: 10 points
Draw the shape of Earth’s orbit around the sun. (1 pt) What is the angle of the Earth’s tilt on its axis? (1 pt) Explain what Kepler’s law tells us. (1 pt) Explain why the sun is always in motion. Use both the sun and Earth in your example. (1 pt) Explain how Earth moves about the solar system (be sure to use rotate, revolve, nutation, precession, and barycenter, in your response). (5 pts)

4 Today’s Objective (7.2) SWBAT explain how the Earth’s rotation and revolution about the Sun affects its shape and is related to seasons and tides

5 Today’s Exit Ticket What is the main factor that changes daily conditions on earth? (Night and Day) Which two factors are responsible for Earth’s seasons? Explain how high tide occurs. Diagram the earth and which section is the widest. Explain why this section is the largest. (Include- Poles, Equator, Sun)

6 Day and night! Rotation is like spinning and causes DAY and NIGHT

8 4. Rate of Earth’s Rotation
west east Earth makes one complete turn from ______ to _______ every _____________. Angular Rate of Rotation: One complete rotation is equal to _______ degrees in 24 hours or _________. 24 hours 360 15o/hr

9 So, what causes earths seasons?

10 Revolution! Sun Revolution is the motion of Earth traveling around the __________ in it’s __________ . ______________ of Earth’s axis: The position of Earth’s axis is parallel to every other position of the axis. a. This is the cause of _________ on Earth. orbit Parallelism seasons

PHASES OF THE MOON HOW LONG DOES THIS TAKE? THE LUNAR CYCLE TAKES 27.3 DAYS TO COMPLETE *1

30 PHASES OF THE MOON HOW LONG DOES THIS TAKE? BUT IT APPEARS TO TAKE 29.3 FROM EARTH BECAUSE EARTH IS ALSO MOVING IN SPACE *1

31 What is the shape of Earth?
Well, it isn’t flat but its also not a perfect circle. Because of what is called centrifugal force, the earth takes on more of an oval shape. The earth is spinning so fast and is attracted by the sun that it revolves around, it is constantly being stretched outwards at the equator. How tall is Earth? How wide is Earth?

32 Time to practice! We will be doing stations a little different this time. Today we only have 3 stations and you will be rotating from the front of your row directly to the back You will each recieve a sheet of blank paper and you are to fold it into 3 equal parts. Number each part Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3 and draw a line to seperate each section You will have 4 minutes at each station so work quickly!!! Follow the instructions at each station!

33 Ready for today’s exit ticket?
