3 Vocabulary Mercantilism – 17th century economic principle: the prosperity of a nation depended on a large supply of gold and silver Imperialism – the extension of a nation’s power over other lands Colonialism - the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country or territory, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically

4 Vocabulary (cont.) Tributary system - Chinese network of trade and foreign relations between China and East Asia, which for over a 1,000 years drove the economy in the region Viceroy – a governor who ruled as a representative of a monarch Columbian Exchange - a period of cultural and biological exchanges between the New and Old Worlds

5 Vocabulary (cont.) Pathogens - a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease Topography - the art or science of making maps that show the height, shape, etc.
