3 000 BC – 500 AD Classical Culture 2nd century BC the Roman empire expanded fast Romans admired the Greeks Romans took over ideas from Greek art Greek gods were given Roman names: Zeus Jupiter Aphrodite  Venus Greek-Roman culture together = Classical culture

3 000 BC – 500 AD Typical Roman They worshipped their emperors like gods They spoke Latin Wore a gown Did their sums with Roman numbers Had entertainment in amphitheaters Went to bathhouses Customs and habits  Roman culture

3 000 BC – 500 AD Germanic people Outside Italy simple life Germanic people (for example Batavians) lived in small villages Farmers eating their own food, sometimes they traded their food They had their own gods: Donar (god of war) and Freya (Goddess of love/fertility) They also worshipped nature How did the Romans influence Germanic people???

3 000 BC – 500 AD Roman influence Roman administrators and soldiers continued their Roman way of living outside Italy Merchants sold Roman products in the Germanic area Local population was very interested They were not obliged to take over Roman culture but they did it out of interest = Romanisation (adapting Roman culture)  slow process What about civil rights? Outside Italy only a few got civil rights: soldiers and sometimes his family
