Acinar cell damage results in premature activation of proenzymes, autodigestion, and acute necroinflammation of the pancreas. An imbalance between proinflammatory cytokine production and the systemic anti-inflammatory response system results in excessive cytokine production, SIRS, and multiorgan failure. hcMSC transplanted 24 hours after induction of AP in an animal model block pancreatic necrosis, inflammation, and proinflammatory cytokine production, most likely because of decreased T-cell infiltration and enhanced recruitment of Treg.
