Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic Rocks are rocks made from existing rocks changed by heat, pressure, or chemicals.

Formation of Metamorphic Rocks
Metamorphic Rocks form by a process called metamorphism. Metamorphism: Heat, pressure, or chemicals change one type of rock to another Contact: Metamorphism that occurs when rocks come into contact with magma Regional: Metamorphism that occurs over large areas due to heat and pressure

Types of Metamorphic Rocks
There are 2 types of metamorphic rocks. Foliated Rocks have minerals arranged in bands (lines) in them. But, these bands can cause these rocks to break easily! Example: Gneiss, Schist, Slate

There are 2 types of metamorphic rocks. Nonfoliated Rocks do not have minerals arranged in bands (lines) in them. These are much stronger rocks! Example: Marble, Quartzite

Lab Time Tips: Do NOT eat or throw the candy!
Rough/Smooth = Overall feel Density = How compact it is? Think: Air bubbles or no? Different Parts: Is it all made of the same thing (materials) or no? Layers = Clear divisions (like a layer cake) Bands = lines, easy to pull apart The candy is NOT a perfect representation of the rocks…but it is close, so use your reasoning skills.
